About MGA Licensed Casinos
Being an all-in-one solution when it comes to licensing, the MGA promotes and ensures that gaming is both fair and transparent. Different Types of Licenses
There are four different kinds, or classes, of gaming license which the MGA offers. These are as follows:
- Class 1 – This one is a remote gaming license that covers operators’ who administrate their own risks through offering players repetitive casino-style games, slots and lotteries. All of these results depend on random number generation. Around 49% of their licensees hold this their most commonly held license. This is also the license that almost all new online casinos work with.
- Class 2 – This remote sports betting license covers operatives offering bets on sporting events built around a matchbook, like fixed-odds sports betting. Around 37% of their licensees hold this license.
- Class 3 – This remote gaming license covers those who promote, or aid in some way, remote gaming from Malta. This could be in the form of poker or bingo networks, via player-to-player games, or maybe a betting exchange for example.
- Class 4 – A little different again, this remote gaming license is for B2B operators who manage and/or host other B2C remote gaming processes at their gaming site.
As well as MGA casinos, they license the following products too: Amusement machines and advertising lotteries, cruise casinos and commercial bingo halls, remote gaming and gaming devices, racecourse bets and sweepstakes, and even the national lottery and various non-profit games.
Two of the only things which the MGA doesn’t license within the iGaming industry, are spread betting and horse racing.
MGA A Brief History
Established 20 years ago, back in 2001, The Malta Gaming Authority (formerly known as The Lotteries and Gaming Authority or LGA for short) was a frontrunner in the field of regulation and licensing within the iGaming and casino industry.
Malta was one of the few who met the mounting acceptance and rise in popularity of online casino gaming. This early start gave them an advantage over others who would have liked to provide the same kind of services.
Hosts More Than 10% of All Online Casinos
In a 2013 report on remote gaming, the KPMG quotes: “Malta is at the forefront of the remote gaming industry and home to some of the world’s largest and most profitable online gaming companies.” They also mentioned that: “Malta hosts approximately 10% of the world’s online gaming operators”.
Back in 2008 the EU, having only a 0.68% gross gaming income themselves at that time, identified Malta as having a gross gaming income of around 7.8% of the country’s GDP as a whole. Indeed, gaming is so big in Malta that nearly 50% of the entire country’s bandwidth is taken up by online gaming.
Low Taxes
To bring in new online gaming companies, and keep hold of the relationships they have with the ones already in operation there, Malta has done their upmost to make everything as attractive as possible for them.
This is especially true when it comes to tax, which to date they have managed to keep very low in Malta. The official tax rate sits at 35%. However, once certain dividends get paid to the stakeholders, by trading companies, those stakeholders can legally claim back around 85% of the taxes which they have paid. What does that mean? Well, that means that they only end up paying around 5% of that tax in total.
It hasn’t harmed Malta that they have a good, strong position within the Eurozone either. This has protected them from being at the whim of international capital markets. These things have added greatly to the popularity of Malta with operators from all over the globe, including Canada.
New Laws for Remote Gaming Regulations
Another thing that has gone in Malta’s favor is that back in 2004 they renewed their gaming laws with the Remote Gaming Regulations. This new take on how the licenses worked was welcomed worldwide by online casino operators. Mainly because it didn’t force them to differentiate between all the different varieties of tech used or between the games played.
With the new framework, providers could hold one license which covered online and mobile gaming, along with all kinds of game types. As you can imagine, this dramatically dropped the number of hoops companies had to jump through in order to get full licensing.
Not only were these regulations better for the providers, but they were clearly better on numerous levels for the players, offering them much more support and many more forms of protection. This was particularly seen in the way that operators’ funds and the personal accounts of clients were separated, as well as making it a legal obligation for those operators to return any sums of money which had been left in inactive accounts to the players.
How Reliable Are the Malta Gaming Authority?
About as trustworthy and reliable as you can get is the quick answer. They were the 1st country to adopt the “Lotteries and Other Games Act“. By properly regulate online gambling at an early stage, Malta was foresighted enough to secure its position within the industry.
The legal structures which they put in place back then, when things were still mostly unregulated, set an official standard. Others were then forced to follow, which is still in place today.
Known to be well structured and strict, Malta’s gaming regulations are also honest, open, and fair. This is something which the MGA takes great pride in. Transparency and fairness is something which they have written into their mission statement, along with making it their mission to protect the vulnerable and prevent crime.
